Using the green, fast, and robust ultrasound technique, researchers have already encapsulated salicylates and benzoates into tannin microcapsules (TMCs). The generated TMCs acquired without using cross-linking agents have been fully characterized, along with encapsulation efficiencies concerning the encapsulated actives. Studies have investigated the release kinetics of TMCs mimicking skin conditions.

The present study prepared Body cream base samples retaining specific concentrations of microcapsules filled with sunscreen actives, which showed synergistic effects regarding UV-protection abilities generated by the interplay between sunscreen actives and natural tannin polyphenols. The synergistic effect exerted by the tannin and the controlled active release reduced the amount of synthetic sunscreens needed. This can thus contribute to developing more sustainable and environmentally benign UV-protection systems.
